Anthony Chan Student Award

The Anthony Chan Award was established through a contribution by Anthony Chan to honor and recognize the achievements of students engaged in Asian American Studies and their involvement with Asian American communities. The announcement is circulated in the beginning of the Spring semester each year.

Who is eligible:

Any enrolled UMass Boston undergraduate student who has:

• taken at least one course in Asian American Studies or has completed research on Asian American issues and shown strong academic performance in this area; and
• demonstrated active involvement in the Asian American communities (including internships, volunteer work, activism, community organizing, as well as other forms of active involvement).

How to apply:

Students may be self-nominated or nominated by a UMB faculty member. In the latter case, nominoators should submit a short statement of support after confirming that the student is willing to complete the application process.

A completed application includes:

• Name, student ID#, home address, email, and phone number.
• A typed essay of up to 500 words which describes the applicant's involvement in an Asian American community and a description of how taking courses in Asian American Studies has influenced his or her thinking and actions.
• Two letters of recommendation, one from someone who is familiar with the applicant's invovement in an Asian American community, and one from a UMass Boston faculty member with whom you have studied (Asian American Studies preferred, but not required).

Completed applications must be submitted to the Institute for Asian American Studies, Healey Library, 10th floor by Monday, May 19, 2008 at 4:00 p.m.

All information submitted will remain confidential and will be read by a committee of UMass Boston faculty and staff. An interview with the applicant may be requested as part of the selection process.
